Saving & Improving Lives

The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe is dedicated to saving and improving the lives of pets through adoption, community spay/neuter, and humane education programs.

Established in 1994

Founded in 1994 by a group of committed volunteers, the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe has become the driving force in animal rescue and adoption for the Truckee region.

Over time, we have grown from a small grass roots entity to a nationally recognized non-profit organization with ten employees and hundreds of dedicated volunteers

Truckee Shelter

Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe/Town of Truckee’s Remy’s Rescue Animal Shelter

In September 2013, HSTT and The Town of Truckee solidified our long-standing partnership by opening our first public animal shelter…together. This facility maximizes efficiency and effectiveness by housing the public and private entities under the same roof.

Working together, we are saving 100% of our community’s adoptable homeless pets. In addition we rescue animals from overcrowded shelters whenever space in our facility allows.

Since opening the doors to our beautiful new shelter, we’ve increased our adoptions by 150%!

  • Continue on Donner Pass Road past Glenshire Drive and up the hill.
  • Turn right on Stockrest Springs, the first right after Glenshire Drive. (If you’ve reached the roundabout, you’ve gone too far.)

Feel free to spend some time with our kittens in their very own room. It’s full of toys and fun things to climb on. They love visitors and will ham it up for you and your family. Our adult cats also have a beautiful, open and airy room where they watch videos of squirrels, birds and mice to pass time while awaiting your visit. Our dog rooms are spacious, clean and allow folks to really get to know their potential furry family member.

It’s a beautiful facility. Please come check it out!

For the safety of your pets, please leave them at home while visiting our shelter.

South Lake Tahoe Office

The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe now serves as an overarching, lake-wide animal care network, restoring welfare services to South Lake Tahoe animals from Glenbrook to Meyers. In early 2019, we began restoring animal welfare services to the South Lake Tahoe community, including humane education, pet therapy, and volunteer programs. We also offer no & low-cost community spay/neuter services and Wellness Clinics to the area’s pets.

As of January 2019, operations have fully transitioned to HSTT as we have the leadership team and resources in place to serve our growing community.  Since adding the south shore to our coverage area there has been a significant increase in the quality and amount of animal welfare services offered in South Lake Tahoe and beyond. HSTT now provides a one care network for all Lake Tahoe animals – spanning as far north as Sierra County and as far south as areas in Douglas and El Dorado Counties.

Low cost spay and neuter vouchers are now available to the South Lake Tahoe community and additional services will be available in the near future. View form here.
