In 1998, a temporary animal shelter was constructed at the Town of Truckee corporation yard to provide short-term housing for stray and surrendered pets. Shortly thereafter, a growing relationship between the Town of Truckee and the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe was strengthened by an agreement to co-house our respective animals within this shelter.
In 2007, well past its intended life expectancy, the shelter was no longer meeting all of our needs so both HSTT and the Town realized that a new home for our animals was a necessity. After much consideration, we agreed to build a joint animal shelter, thus allowing us to be more effective, efficient, and work together to save as many lives as possible.
Over the years, this one-of-a-kind public/private partnership has developed into a deep respect, understanding, loyalty, and most importantly, a collective understanding and agreement that all animals deserve the opportunity to live a good life.
By working together, we have saved the lives of every single adoptable homeless pet in our community since 1998.
Groundbreaking for our new shelter took place on July 13, 2012 and we moved all our pets over and opened our doors to the public in September of 2013.
As we embark on this beautiful journey and share this gift with all of you, we will never forget our roots and our humble beginnings.
Our most sincere gratitude goes to everyone who helped make this dream of a new shelter a reality.
